A DBT skills group is a group-based skills training program aiming to teach individuals a variety of skills to improve their ability to manage their emotions, to cultivate effective relationship skills, and to pursue a life worth living. DBT is an evidence-based intervention used to support individuals with emotion regulation difficulties and various psychological conditions, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), depression, anxiety, and substance use conditions.
This skills group will last for 15 sessions, with each weekly session lasting for 1.5 hours. The 15 sessions are separated into 3 thematic modules, namely distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Individual may choose to enroll in all 3 modules or select module that is best suited to the needs.
The DBT skills group is suitable for adults (age 18-55) dealing with difficulties with regulating emotions, impulsive behaviors, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and/or self-harm behaviors. Participants need to be proficient in English, and are not currently experiencing active psychotic or manic symptoms, or a developmental disorder.
Participants experiencing active suicidal or self-harm thoughts and behaviors are required to have an existing individual treatment provider (e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, or case manager) whom they are seeing regularly (minimally once per month), who is agreeable to manage any risk-related issues.
Ms. Cloyee Wong is a Clinical Psychologist. She has co-delivered several DBT skills groups (for patients with depression, anxiety, BPD, etc) in both English and Mandarin. She has had experiences providing CBT-oriented psychological interventions and conducting assessment for children and adults in hospital and community centres. She has treated clients with a range of presentations, such as mood, anxiety, eating, and personality disorders. Ms. Cloyee Wong is a registered member of Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology MAHPC (CP) 00341
Each participant will first need to attend an intake session. The session will assess the participant’s presenting issues, identify preliminary treatment goals, and assess their suitability and commitment to attend the skills group.
The session will cost RM250 and is expected to last between 1 and 1.5 hours. The fee is inclusive of a printed, hard copy DBT skills handouts and worksheets (>100 pages long), which the participant will be using throughout the skills group.
Participants can choose to enroll on a modular basis (1 module at a time), or in all 3 modules at once. Each module will consists of 5 sessions (1.5 hours each).
The fee structure is contingent upon the total number of participants in a group. For group of 4-6 participants, the fee will be RM750. Conversely, for group with 2-3 participants, the fee will be RM1000.
